Joseon Dynasty White Porcelain Square Bottle

ARCHIVED

A white porcelain square bottle fired at Bunwon official kiln during the late Joseon dynasty. The panels were combined to form a cube, and the shoulders were bevelled with a spatula. It has a translucent white surface, and the quaint hairline running around the sides creates a unique scene.

From the mid-Joseon dynasty onwards, pure white ritual vessels that embodied the ideals of the dynasty were steadily produced, and square vase like this piece was created as part of that trend. As it has a simple shape with minimal decoration, the slight fluctuation of the outline highlights its simplicity.

There is a spot about 7cm above the bottom where water seeps out little by little. Some of the cracked parts of the hairline have been repaired with Kintsugi. Discoloration can be seen at the base.
