Oribe Ware Ao-Oribe Style Leaf-Shaped Handled Dish

ARCHIVED

An Oribe ware handled dish, crafted during the early Edo period. It is an exquisite example of the innovative artistry of the Yashichida kiln in Ogaya, which operated from the early Genna era (1615–1624) to the mid-Kan’ei era (1624–1644). The dish is shaped like a maple leaf using press-moulding techniques and features a tube handle. A hanging persimmon is painted on the interior, while a copper-green glaze flows from the handle to the inner surface, creating a vibrant contrast. The base is supported by three legs, and the leaf veins in relief on the underside add intricate charm and allure to the piece.

Smaller than most Oribe handled dishes, this example stands out for its refined craftsmanship and inventive design, embodying the dynamic spirit of Oribe ware.

Minor chips are present on the tips of the leaf, but otherwise, the dish is in excellent condition. It comes housed in an old box inscribed with “Old Oribe Leaf-Shaped Handled Dish,”
