Taisho Kirigome Ware Blue and White Porcelain Cup with Pine Tree and Crane Design

ARCHIVED

A soba choko cup originating from the revival of Kirigome ware, which existed during the Taishō-period (1912-1926). The Kirigome ware was discontinued initially in the early Meiji era, but the kiln was temporarily re-established through the efforts of the Miyagi Prefectural Tourism Office and local supporters. However, the revival remained experimental and ultimately came to an end without achieving full-scale production.

This rare piece, fired during that fleeting resurgence, bears the inscription mark “Kirigome” on the base. Its coarse porcelain body, softly blurred cobalt decoration, and wavering linework fall short of the refinement seen in earlier Kirikomi ware, yet it conveys the memory of a community’s aspiration to revive its ceramic heritage.

Aside from minor kiln-related imperfections, the cup is in good condition.
