Later Lê Dynasty Blue and White Small Dish

ARCHIVED

A blue and white dish produced in Đại Việt during the Later Lê to Mạc dynasty. At its centre sits the auspicious character phúc (福), encircled by abstract and arabesque motifs—an arrangement more commonly found on tea bowls, suggesting that this piece may once have formed a pair with one. Iron-brown wash is applied within the footring, while the exterior is adorned with a lama-style lotus petal design.

Fired prior to the development of blue-and-white porcelain in Imari, this dish stands as a notable example of Vietnamese ceramics that may have influenced early Hizen ware. In particular, its form and expression evoke a strong affinity with the so-called kurawanka style. The softly blurred brushwork under the glaze and the milky, flowing surface lend the piece a quiet charm.

Minor glaze flaking is present on the rim, along with a small chip on the foot, both insignificant. Apart from natural kiln flaws, the condition is very good.
