Kihara Ware Blue and White Pottery Tea Bowl with Pine, Bamboo and Plum Design

ARCHIVED

Early Edo period tea bowl, produced within the Hirado domain of Hizen so called “Kihara Chawan”. Based on the contour of the foot rim, it is estimated to date from the 1660s–1680s. Painted in multiple shades of gosu (cobalt pigment) with varying iron content, the surface fires to a pale bluish-grey tone. While many examples of this type feature abstract, abbreviated motifs, this piece is notable for its skillful use of tonal contrast to depict Shochikubai (pine, bamboo, and plum) in a more naturalistic manner. Areas of stained crackle add a sense of time layered upon the vessel’s surface.

A single short hairline is present, blending into the crackle. Apart from minor kiln flaws, the condition is very good.
