Wooden Lattice Window | China, 18-19C

A wooden lattice window installed in the house in southern China. The arabesque pattern include a bird, a flower and leafs are excellently carved from a single tree.

Chinese lattice windows, which are both fixtures and ornaments at the wooden house, may be close to stained glass in the West. However, there is a difference in that the inside and outside are connected by openwork and it always ventilates. This is probably because the Chinese people who believe in Taoism emphasized the “flow of energy.”

This lattice window conveys that faith tends to affect the spatial function of the dwelling.

Warpage and deterioration over time are seen, but there is no damage.
