Seto Ware Taihaku-Type Bottle with Abstract Pattern in Underglaze Iron and Blue

ARCHIVED

A bottle fired in Seto in the late Edo period. It is a type of pottery produced under the influence of Hizen porcelain, commonly known as “Taihaku-type.” It has a distinctive shape with a delicate neck extending from the body resembling an abacus bead, and it is assumed that it was originally made as an oil jar. The glaze’s bright texture, deep crazing, and unique abstract pattern with a combination of underglaze iron and cobalt are intriguing.

There are no oil stains or odours inside. The chips around the mouth have been repaired with lacquer, and have partly peeled off. There are no other noticeable defects, and the condition is generally good.
