Yokino Ware Buddhist Vase

¥48,000 JPY

A Buddhist flower vase of Yokino ware, fired in Tanegashima island during the late Edo period. The vessel is covered with a deliberately thin glaze, over which natural ash glaze accumulated during firing. Iron emerging from the clay has fused with these layers to create a hard, richly stratified surface. A distinctive pair of ears rises from the neck, suggestive of stylised living forms, while finely incised concentric and undulating lines encircle the shoulder with quiet restraint.

Tanegashima has long maintained a strong Buddhist tradition, and alongside jars and other utilitarian vessels, its kilns produced considerable numbers of flower vases for ritual use. Many, however, were buried or allowed to return to the earth as part of memorial practices, making well-preserved examples such as the present piece comparatively rare. While the work reveals an awareness of the ceramic traditions of Naeshirogawa, it also embodies the distinctive folk spirituality of the island, expressed through its restrained ornament and deeply elemental presence.

A small chip is present on the lower body. A kiln adhesion can be seen on the base, though the vessel sits firmly without rocking.
