Qing Dynasty Jingdezhen Blue and White Porcelain Cup with Tibetan Script Design

ARCHIVED

A blue and white cup made in Jingdezhen during the Qing dynasty. It has a flat bottom and a Tibetan script pattern on the exterior. In place of the Ming dynasty, which mainly practised Chinese Buddhism (Mahayana), the Qing dynasty ruled by Manchus practised Tibetan Buddhism. It was conscious of the alliance with the Mongols, who were deeply devoted to Tibetan Buddhism, and successive emperors built close relationships with high priests and incorporated the style into their rituals and cultural artifacts. However, as before, the designs of blue and white porcelain mainly consist of natural landscapes, flowers and birds, and it is extremely rare to find designs with Tibetan script patterns like the one in this piece. It may have been a ritual vessel rather than an everyday vessel.

There are some minor scratches on the interior and exterior, but overall it is in good condition.
