Trần Dynasty Teabowl with Chinese Character Design in Underglaze Iron

ARCHIVED

A teabowl crafted during the Trần dynasty in Đại Việt (current northern Vietnam). It has a relatively shallow body with a curved rim, and iron oxide is used to depict water plants and Chinese characters. The clay body appears to have been given a white makeover, which is then covered with a beautiful transparent glaze with a slightly reduced appearance. The Chinese character’s design is difficult to read as some parts and the meaning are unclear. However, the handwriting is skilful, given the low literacy rate of the time, suggesting that it was created by a calligrapher or professional painter. This bowl recalls the cultural prosperity of medieval Vietnam.

There is a spot on the rim where the frills have peeled off. Apart from kiln marks, there are no other noticeable defects, and the condition is excellent.
