Mino Ware Taihaku-Type Bowl with “Kotobuki” Design in Underglaze Iron

ARCHIVED

A bowl fired in Mino in the late Edo period. It is a type of pottery produced under the influence of Hizen porcelain, commonly known as ‘Taihaku-type.’ A rare example of iron rather than cobalt painting, this bowl showcases powerful brushstrokes forming the Kotobuki (longevity) character, harmonizing with the bowl’s robust body. The iron drip along the rim adds a unique accent, giving the piece added depth and character.

The same piece appears in the Mino Stoneware Blue and White Exhibition catalogue from the Toyota City Folk Craft Museum. It has several hairlines extending from the rim, though some do not penetrate the back side.
