Tang Dynasty Sancai Small Ewer
¥90,000 JPYA Sancai small ewer fired during the Tang dynasty. It is a miniature of an amphora with dragon-shaped handles, modelled after a Western amphora, and was made as burial goods. It features a thin white slip underglaze, over which green glaze cascades from the mouth, and brown glaze flows from the shoulder, achieving a distinctive striped pattern through the wax-resist technique. This process leaves intentional white spots that add to its aesthetic charm. Interestingly, one of the handles was removed before glazing, giving prominence to the remaining handle’s elegant, finely crafted shape. It is an excellent Tang Sancai piece to enjoy on a palm.
The top of the remaining handle shows a minor chip, but the glaze is intact and free from flaking, making it an exceptionally well-preserved piece for its age.
