Joseon Dynasty Blue and White Porcelain Jar with Peony Design

ARCHIVED

A blue and white jar was fired in the official kiln of Bunwon-ri, Gwangju, during the late Joseon dynasty. It has a rounded body with a slightly outward-flaring mouth and iron-rich grits attached to the inner foot. Round jars of this type are made in various sizes, but this piece is relatively smaller. The porcelain’s faint bluish tint provides a delicate background to the peony design, painted in soft, wash-like brushstrokes—a timeless motif embodying elegance and simplicity.

The Kinstugi restorations are skillfully applied to the two chips on the rim. The base has minor, time-worn chips that harmonise naturally. It comes in a box labelled “Joseon Dynasty Blue and White Small Jar.”
