Maruyama Ware White Slipped Vase with Chrysanthemum Design in Underglaze Blue

ARCHIVED

A Maruyama ware Buddhist flower vase fired at Mt. Horai in Miyazaki Prefecture during the late Edo period. Only the upper half is applied white slip, with chrysanthemum motifs painted in cobalt and iron oxide. The transparent glaze is covered until the side of the foot; the lower half shows a greenish-grey tone. Maruyama ware originated from a Kyo ware potter’s initiative in the Tenpo era (1830–1844) and catered to local demand with a charming variety of pottery. This piece is filled with the distinctive style of Maruyama ware, with adorable paintings on one side. This design is particularly unique among Buddhist flower vases crafted all over Japan.

There is a small recolouring on the rim. Otherwise, there are no noticeable defects, and the condition is generally good.
