Joseon Dynasty Tamago-de Type Teabowl

ASK

Price range : ¥500,000 - ¥750,000

“A precious Tamago-de (“egg-coloured”) tea bowl, produced in the early Joseon dynasty, is distinguished by its soft, yellowish glaze tone from which its Japanese name derives. Among the diverse types of Kōrai chawan (Korean tea bowls), examples of this kind are exceptionally rare. The form recalls that of Komogai tea bowls, suggesting production in the southern region of Korea, around present-day Gyeongsangbuk-do.

The sharply cut footring rises into a pointed tōkin shape, while natural glaze shrinkage in the clay body at the waist exposes the rich, iron-bearing fabric beneath the glaze. Inside the bowl, three spur marks and a subtle dent at the centre (kagami-ochi). The glaze, vividly fluid and tinged with pale blue, flows with a vitality that contrasts yet harmonises with the quiet restraint of the overall form. It is a work in which dynamism and stillness coexist—an outstanding example of early Joseon ceramic aesthetics.

An old kintsugi restoration is visible along the rim, attesting to the bowl’s long appreciation and careful preservation. It is accompanied by a shifuku (drawstring pouch) and housed in an old wooden box inscribed “Kōrai chawan.””
