Southern Song Dynasty Qingbai Ware Teabowl with Incised Wave Pattern
A qingbai ware (bluish-white) tea bowl from the Southern Song dynasty. It belongs to the type known as douli zhan (“straw-hat bowl”), a form that emerged and evolved during the Song dynasty alongside the growing use of chairs and the resulting change in posture and viewing perspective. Its elegant, gently flaring profile reflects the aesthetic sophistication that came to define Song-period tea culture.
Produced at the Hutian kilns in Jingdezhen, this example typifies the finest qingbai wares of southern China. A pure white porcelain body is covered with a translucent, icy-blue glaze, beneath which a delicately incised wave design subtly emerges in shadow at the centre. The combination of technical precision and understated decoration captures the restraint and refinement characteristic of Southern Song ceramic artistry.
Though finely potted, the bowl carries a satisfying weight in the hand, its cool glaze exuding a serene luminosity. Minor chips are visible around the footring, but the condition remains excellent overall. Housed in a fitted wooden box.
