Joseon Dynasty Gimhae Ware Katede-Type Dish
A Gimhae ware dish produced at kilns around Gimhae, Gyeongsangnam-do. This soft-bodied dish, measuring approximately 18 cm in diameter, is fully glazed, with no spur marks in the front face. Its lustrous surface, veiled in a fine network of crackles, shimmers with a moist sheen.
While many early Joseon wares are known only from excavated examples, this piece appears to have reached Japan at an early date and been handed down over generations, preserving a fresh, almost dewy brilliance. The darkened stain in the front face, the result of long use, creates a patina of tea-infused depth. Its history of appreciation as a Hirachawan (flat tea bowl) reflects the resonance of such vessels within the aesthetics of the tea ceremony, marking this as a particularly distinguished example of Gimhae ware.
A small flake to the rim and several minute chips are present, but aside from minor surface marks, the condition is exceptionally fine. Housed in a box inscribed “Kōrai Gimhae Hirachawan.”
