Qing Dynasty Cizhou-type Ware Blue and White Bottle
A bottle produced at a Cizhou-type kiln during the Qing dynasty. It is formed with a gourd-shaped body and a flared trumpet mouth. Swift brushwork renders an abstracted foliate design, and the restrained tonality of the blue suggests the use of natural cobalt, placing the piece among the earlier examples within the tradition of Cizhou-type blue-and-white ware.
Areas of exposed clay have darkened through long-time use, and the swirling trimming marks at the base lend the piece a profound character. The crisp, well-balanced silhouette sits comfortably in the hand, making it especially suited to a sake bottle.
A single chip on the reverse of the rim has been applied with an excellent Gintsukuroi. Apart from minor kiln damage, no other significant flaws are present.
