Joseon Dynasty Hoeryong Ware White Porcelain Bowl

¥72,000 JPY

A bowl originating from the early Joseon dynasty. The form curves gently inward, Kagamiochi (circular dent) on a well with a boldly spiralling wheel mark and a distinct patch of stone spur marks. The coarse, wrinkled clay body—its surface marked by a crêpe texture—suggests an origin in Hoeryeong or the surrounding northern region.

Although the profile recalls bowls of Goryeo celadon, the glaze here leans not toward celadon proper but toward a bluish white. It reflects a transitional moment: an emerging aspiration toward white porcelain in early Joseon, yet not entirely detached from the lingering celadon tradition of the Goryeo period. The bowl’s unconventional character—rarely paralleled among surviving examples—conveys the spirit of experimentation at the kilns and embodies the aesthetic and technical shifts of an era in transition.

An excavated piece of long-term use, it displays some areas of matte roughness that have settled over time. Aside from minor kiln damage typical of its type, it remains in good condition. It is accompanied by a Shifuku drawstring pouch and an old wooden box inscribed “Kōrai Chawan.”
