Shigaraki Ware Teabowl
A teabowl of early Edo–period Shigaraki ware. It shapes the waist and foot into a square form, while deliberately leaving the rim uneven, imparting a subdued, rustic wabi presence. Across the mottled reddish-brown surface, countless feldspathic inclusions break through, and soft patches of ash-formed white provide a gentle counterpoint. Although Shigaraki ware originated as utilitarian pottery, the demands of tea masters encouraged the production of exquisite tea utensils marked by intention, nuance, and profound atmospheric depth. This chawan, in which deliberation and accident coexist in vivid balance, embodies the vigorous, untamed spirit of early Shigaraki ware.
A short hairline may be present but is not conspicuous, and overall, the condition is excellent. The piece is accompanied by a shifuku drawstring pouch and a wooden box inscribed “Shigaraki Chawan.”
