Hirashimizu Ware Lipped Bowl

ARCHIVED

A katakuchi lipped bowl of Hirashimizu ware, fired from the end of Edo period to the early Meiji period. The body is covered in white slip over the entire surface except for the foot, and finished with a transparent glaze. Traces of use have settled into the surface, forming a quietly expressive patina.

Hirashimizu ware, a folk kiln tradition rooted in Yamagata prefecture, became known from the late Edo period for its white-slip, white-glazed wares. While aspiring to the brightness of porcelain, it retains the inherent warmth of earthenware. Bowls of this type, formed with a pouring spout, are often made in larger sizes; this example, with its compact and well-balanced proportions, is comparatively rare and particularly suited to use as a sake vessel.

There is an area of glaze loss at the spout and a single hairline at the rim. Aside from these, there are no notable defects, and the overall condition is good.
