Goreyo Celadon Teabowl with Incised Lotus Flower Design
A celadon tea bowl, fired during the Goryeo dynasty. The vessel takes the form of a deep hemispherical shape, the exterior incised with a lotus motif. The glaze, lustrous and richly applied, is traversed by a fine network of crackle, its tone settling into a subdued olive green.
The colour recalls the wares of the Yaozhou kilns in China, often cited as a source of influence for Goryeo celadon, and here suggests a direct continuity between the two traditions. Though generously proportioned, the bowl remains well suited to use as a tea vessel; its stable centre of gravity when held in the hand attests to a high level of functional refinement. Beneath the elegance associated with jade green lies a quiet strength and an earthy sensibility characteristic of Goryeo ceramics.
Aside from minor kiln-related imperfections, there are no noticeable defects, and the condition is excellent. Accompanied by a wooden box.
