Joseon Dynasty Gimhae Ware Jar

ARCHIVED

A jar, fired in the early Joseon dynasty in the Gimhae region. Formed of a soft clay and covered with a transparent glaze, the surface presents a gentle, milky-white tone. The foot is roughly cut away with a trimming tool, and notches are incised around its edge. Such cuts, made to prevent cracking during the firing process, are characteristic of wares from Gimhae, and may be regarded in Japan as the origin of the later, the design of kiri-kōdai (split footrim). Retaining the unassuming form of an everyday container, the piece quietly approaches the core of tea aesthetics.

A short hairline crack is visible at the rim. Apart from this, there are no notable defects, and the condition is good.
