Mino Ware Tenmoku Glazed Jar

ARCHIVED

A jar fired in Mino during the Muromachi period. The vessel has a broad-shouldered, low-centred form, covered from the rim to the lower body with a lustrous tenmoku glaze. The lower section is left unglazed, exposing the clay body, while the base forms a flat foot with a shallow central depression.

By the late Kamakura period, the production of tenmoku tea bowls modelled after Chinese ceramics had begun in the Seto and Mino regions, and these techniques continued throughout the Muromachi era. The present work was produced as an everyday storage vessel using the same clay and glaze employed for tea ceramics. Though classed as utilitarian ware, it fully expresses the dense and atmospheric qualities characteristic of tenmoku glaze.

Kiln adhesions and other firing flaws are visible on the body. Apart from old chips and small losses at the rim, the overall condition remains good.
