Obori Soma Ware Cup with Splashed Green Glaze Decoration

ARCHIVED

An Obori Soma ware Soba-choko cup fired in the late Edo period. It is has an artless elegance in shape that leaves the uneven potter’s wheel marks on the interior and exterior, and turning tool marks on inside foot. The splashed green glaze decoration, which is reminiscent of ancient Chinese kilns such as the Changsha kiln, was one of the designs used in various area in Japan at that time. It covered with craquelure and green glaze draws a scenic ridgeline in harmony with the white ash glaze ground.

A short hairline can be seen on the inside of the lip, but it does not pass through the exterior. There is a kiln crack on the bottom, but no leakage.
