Chōsen White Porcelain Jug with Splashed Blue Decoration

ARCHIVED

A liquor jug fired in Haeju, South Hwanghae Province, in Korea under Japanese rule. It is thought to be a jug for serving shochu. The cobalt was applied to the shoulder using the Japanese technique of ladle pouring.

After the dissolution of the Bunwon official kiln, the kilns of Haeju produced a large number of blue-and-white works in the style of the later Bunwon style. This piece is characteristic of an example strongly influenced by Japanese Mingei folk art pottery, and its form is similar to the “Karakara” pottery of Ryukyu and Satsuma. It is a piece that represents the time when they lost their former characteristics under the control of the government general, but it is also a scarce example.

The jug has a capacity of approximately 250ml. It is practical, with no noticeable stains or odours and excellent water drainage. The piece is in excellent condition, with only minor stains and kiln damage.
