Chōsen White Porcelain Cylindrical Teabowl with Bridge Design in Underglaze Iron

ARCHIVED

A cylindrical teabowl fired in Korea under Japanese rule. This piece is presumed to be modelled after the Momoyama period Shino ware masterpiece “Hashihime.” It replicates key features of the original, including the trapezoid silhouette and double footring in addition to the painting.

During this period in Korea, ceramics were to be characterised as a local speciality, with many items produced specifically for the Japanese market. While most were reproductions of Joseon dynasty designs, replicas of Japanese masterpieces, like this teabowl, are exceedingly rare. The stark, cold impression of the white porcelain contrasts intriguingly with the warmth of Shino ware, creating an engaging visual contradiction.

The piece is in excellent condition, with no noticeable defects.
