Karatsu Ware E-Karatsu Style Mukozuke Dish

ARCHIVED

A Kogaratsu Mukozuke dish, crafted between the 1590s and 1600s, originates probably from either the Uchida Saraya kiln or the Taku-Korai kiln. The rectangular cylindrical body is adorned with freely drawn motifs of willow, swallow, arrowhead, and vertical stripes. Two incised lines encircle the dish just below the lip, and the feldspar glaze is meticulously applied up to the edge of the base. Not only does it highlight lyrical paintings in various motifs, but its dignified appearance surpasses many similar Kogaratsu pieces and resonates with the spirit of Shino and Oribe ware from the same period.

Undamaged and well cared for, the dish shows its age gracefully. Over time, the crazing has taken on a rich colour, and the footring has become smooth to the touch. It is housed in an old box, labelled “Karatsu Ashtray.”
