Jin Dynasty Cizhou Ware White-Ground Black-Painted Jar with Two Handles
¥50,000 JPYA Cizhou ware jar fired at the Guandai kiln or its surrounding areas in southern Hebei Province during the Jin dynasty. It features a plump shape, two handles, and an iron painting on the white slipped body.
The transition from the elongated forms of Liao dynasty Cizhou ware, shaped for portability under the Khitan nomads, to this jar’s rounded, stable design reflects the shift to an agricultural lifestyle under the Jurchen people of the Jin dynasty. The white-ground black-painted design, first emerging in this period, became a hallmark of Cizhou ware. The jar’s spirited shape, evenly applied glaze, and robust artistry evoke a sense of purpose and beauty.
While minor glaze flaking is visible due to shrinkage variations, and slight damages and stains attest to its age, the jar remains in good condition.
