Trần Dynasty Brown Glazed Petal Shaped Teabowl with Auspicious Motifs in Relief

ARCHIVED

A brown glazed teabowl fired during the Trần dynasty in Đại Việt (current northern Vietnam). The bowl features a petal-shaped rim and an interior adorned with auspicious motifs in relief, including phoenixes, peonies, and clouds. These designs reflect the vigorous cultural and religious exchanges with China, notably Buddhism, which flourished even amidst the challenges of the Yuan invasions. This piece leaves five spur marks on the surface, but there are also examples with a similar design, with Janome unglazed stacking marks. The subdued yet lustrous glaze beautifully accentuates the intricate relief work, evoking the beliefs and customs of the time.

A similar piece is catalogued in Vietnamese Ceramics: A Separate Tradition (1997). Besides a chip on the base, the bowl is generally in good condition.
