Jin Dynasty Cizhou-type Ware Pleated Jar with Splashed Green Glaze on White Ground

ARCHIVED

A jar was fired in a Cizhou-type kiln during the Jin dynasty. The upper body is coated with white slip and a transparent glaze, while the lower body is painted with iron. Beneath the mouth, the double layers of pleated decoration add texture, further embellished with green glaze splashes applied in three distinct areas. The use of splashed green glaze in the Cizhou-type ware at the Liao or Jin dynasties is exceedingly rare, making this piece an example of preserving the Song dynasty technique. Its unique form, which swells toward the top, combined with the layered pleats and vivid green accents, evokes a sense of Jurchen shamanistic aesthetics and profound cultural resonance.

The jar displays signs of age, with surface wear and areas of flaked glaze. The rim has two chips, a hairline crack, and a chip on the foot. It is accompanied by a box.
