Satsuma Ware Ryumonji Kiln Jug

ARCHIVED

A Satsuma ware liquor jug fired in the late Edo period. It is a type of vessel called “Karakara,” which resembles a tokkuri with a spout and was popular mainly in the Ryukyu cultural sphere. The piece is adorned with a brown glaze over a white-slipped body, complemented by vibrant green glaze accents on the mouth. This colourful sansai (three-colour) design reflects influences from Hizen’s Karatsu ware, showcasing the interconnected ceramic traditions of Satsuma and Ryukyu. Such Karakara were traditionally used for shochu in Satsuma and awamori in Ryukyu, but their versatile design makes them equally suitable for the sake.

There are some kiln damages and stains from use but no other noticeable defects, and the condition is excellent.
