Trần Dynasty Ash Glazed Teabowl

¥65,000 JPY

A teabowl fired during the Trần dynasty in Đại Việt (current northern Vietnam). It features a delicate yet well-proportioned form with a distinctive foot adorned with multiple grooves. A captivating pale green ash glaze extends down to the sides of the foot, while five spurmarks remain visible on the interior.

Before the development of underglaze painting techniques, Vietnamese ceramics often displayed elaborate sculptural decoration akin to Chinese Qingbai and celadon wares. However, unlike their Chinese counterparts, Vietnamese ceramics frequently incorporated decorative elements on the foot—a distinguishing characteristic of the region’s works. Despite its thin and refined form, the bowl is fired to a hard and durable finish, reflecting the technical sophistication of medieval Vietnamese craftsmanship.

A similar piece was featured in the exhibition catalogue “Cherishing Asia—The Eyes of A Tea Master and Southeast Asian Ceramics” at Machida City Museum (2008). The rim has a minor 5mm kintsugi repair, and the foot has slight chipping. Aside from these, the bowl remains in generally good condition.
