Trần Dynasty Apple Green Glaze Dish with Fluted Design

ARCHIVED

A green glazed dish fired during the Trần dynasty in Đại Việt (current northern Vietnam). It is decorated with radial fluted lines in the front face and a central unglazed “snake’s-eye” stacking mark. The rim is fashioned with a groove, and the vessel rests on a small, high-fired footring.

Its translucent apple-green glaze—distinctive of Vietnamese wares of this period—is said to derive not from copper, but from the reaction of iron with titanium, producing a luminous hue unique to this tradition. Such glazes are rare, and are frequently encountered without the iron-oxide wash at the base.

Subtle irregularities—the blister within the well and the patch of unglazed clay on the reverse—animate the surface and enrich the depth of the brilliant green.

We applied exquisite Kintsugi restoration on the rim chip. Apart from minor chips and fine surface scratches, the condition is generally excellent.
