Jin Dynasty Cizhou-Type Ware Bowl with Sgraffito Design

ARCHIVED

A bowl fired in the Cizhou-type kiln during the Jin dynasty. It is designed by the sgraffito technique, in which motifs are carved through a coating of white slip before it has dried. The result here is the improvised decoration in a bold manner that evokes the lively motion of creatures in a swarm.

Formed as a shallow bowl with walls slightly curving inward, it has a flat base with a slight central dent. The unglazed rim is the result of an upside-down firing method, while a thick pool of transparent glaze collects in the centre, enhancing the gentle warmth of the white slip beneath.

We applied Kintsugi restoration on the two rim chips. Several hairline cracks extend from the rim, though only about half reach through to the reverse. Aside from minor kiln flaws, the bowl is in generally good condition and is preserved with a fitted box.
