Karatsu Ware Ko-takeo Type Yumino Kiln, Teabowl with White Slip-Brushed Design
A Nisai-Karatsu (Bicoloured Karatsu ware) tea bowl fired at the Yumino kiln in southern Takeo, dating to the early–mid Edo period. The generously proportioned, cylindrical form is coated with a white slip and decorated with a pine motif rendered in iron and copper-green glazes. Milky runs of glaze and blisters enliven the surface, creating a landscape of subtle tonal variation and warmth.
While the Yumino kilns are known for everyday vessels such as jars and bottles bearing pine motifs, tea bowls of this type are exceptionally rare. The present example conveys a quiet wabi sensibility within its folk-art simplicity, embodying both rustic charm and refined tea aesthetics.
Minor flaking to the glaze along the rim, and small kiln grits consistent with age. Otherwise, in good condition. Housed in a fitted wooden box.
