Ming Dynasty Ko-sometsuke Blue and White Porcelain Tea Caddy

¥100,000 JPY

A Ko-sometsuke jarlet produced at one of the private kilns of Jingdezhen during the late Ming dynasty, around the Tianqi era (1621–27). The term Ko-sometsuke (“old blue-and-white”) refers to porcelains made in Jingdezhen for export to Japan, characterised by their freely painted designs and the unrestrained craftsmanship typical of private kilns.

In this piece, a continuous pattern of hexagons encircles the body, each enclosing roundels inscribed with the characters “吉” (auspiciousness) and “喜” (joy). The boldly expressed motifs proclaim good fortune, while the vessel’s compact yet full-bodied form reveals why such wares were prized by Japanese tea practitioners as chaire (tea caddies). Both practical and endearing, it epitomises the informal elegance that made Ko-sometsuke beloved in the tearoom.

A single chip to the rim has been repaired with Kintsugi. Apart from minor kiln alterations, the condition is excellent. Complete with lid and storage box.
