Ming Dynasty Ko-sometsuke Tianqi Porcelain Dish with Overglaze Red

ARCHIVED

A Tianqi red ware dish decorated produced at a private kiln in Jingdezhen during the late Ming dynasty. Porcelains made for export to Japan around the Tianqi era are collectively known in Japan as Ko-sometsuke (old blue-and-white), among which pieces embellished with overglaze red enamels are distinguished as Tianqi overglaze enamels ware.

The design depicts a moonlit castle scene with a returning warrior. A sharply drawn red enamel line encircles the inner rim. Although the brushwork is free and spontaneous, the skilful use of negative space and nuanced modulation of the cobalt conveys a release from tension and a deep sense of relief. The vivid red line framing the scene introduces a striking visual cadence, heightening the drama of the composition.

Areas of glaze flaking, known as “mushikui (worm-eaten)”, are visible on the rim, along with a single small chip. Some overglaze red has partially worn with age but largely survives. Apart from these, there are no significant defects, and the condition is good.
