Joseon Dynasty Blue and White Porcelain Square Bottle with Landscape Decoration

ASK

Price range : ¥250,000 - ¥500,000

A square blue-and-white bottle, produced at a provincial folk kiln during the late Joseon dynasty. Landscapes featuring willow, plum, pine, orchid, and human figures unfold across the four faces, forming a continuous, handscroll-like composition that makes full use of the angular form of the vessel.

The cobalt pigment appears to be locally sourced hoecheong (smalt), rather than imported Chinese cobalt. Its granular texture along the mountain ridges and the darkened accents within the stippled brushwork lend the painting a rustic yet forceful expression. The base is flat with a slight central recess, and the exposed clay retains a faint reddish tone. Decoration, form, and material merge seamlessly, marking this as an exceptional example of provincial craftsmanship.

A kiln crack near the base is structural in origin and commonly found in folk-made square bottles; it does not compromise functionality, and the vessel remains suitable for use as a sake bottle. A crack at the shoulder has been applied with Kintsugi restoration. The bottle is accompanied by a storage box.
