Yuan Dynasty Cizhou-Type Ware Bicolour Glaze Cup

ARCHIVED

A small cup fired at a Cizhou-type kiln during the Yuan dynasty. The rim turns gently inward, giving the vessel a taut, concentrated profile. This piece was not a ritual object but a utilitarian cup intended for drinking huangjiu and other wines. The lower exterior is covered in black glaze, while the upper body and interior are finished with a white slip, with three spur marks remaining in the well.

This two-tone glazing decoration is not merely decorative. The white interior would have allowed the colour and quantity of the liquid to be easily seen, indicating a rational, functional logic embedded within the design. In the restrained contrast of black and white, beauty and utility are brought into clear alignment—a representation of beauty of usage aesthetics that remains intuitively legible even today.

Several minute areas of glaze flaking are visible along the rim, and slight staining is present within the crackle. Apart from typical damages from the kiln process, there are no significant defects.
