Ryukyu Kingdom Green and Brown Biclour Glaze Buddist Vase

¥40,000 JPY

A Buddist flower vase produced at the Tsuboya kilns during the end of the Ryukyu Kingdom. The vessel is formed with a richly modulated silhouette, the lower body coated in a lustrous amber glaze, while the upper section is finished in a soft green glaze, creating a gentle yet expressive contrast.

Buddhism in the Ryukyu Islands developed through a layered synthesis of indigenous beliefs, Chinese cultural influence, and traditions transmitted from mainland Japan—particularly via Satsuma—where Zen and the Jodo sect became predominant. As a result, Buddhist flower vessels from the region often reflect the balanced, formal proportions associated with Japanese Buddhist implements. At the same time, the glazing and colour contrasts retain a distinctly Ryukyuan sensibility, characterised by an expansive, relaxed aesthetic. This piece embodies that cultural intersection with quiet eloquence.

Chips, abrasions, and hairline cracks at the rim have been restored with an exquisite Gintsugi (silver) by Ryuin. There is slight instability due to minor distortion in the form.
