Tang Dynasty Sancai Glazed Jarlet with Four-Handles

ARCHIVED

A sancai-glazed jarlet fired during the Tang dynasty. The piece was produced as a funerary object, its gently rounded body adorned with applied floral motifs and fitted with four small looped lugs at the shoulder. A thin layer of white slip covers the body beneath the glaze. Luminous green glaze is applied across the main surface, while the appliqué decoration is picked out in brown, and the four lugs are reserved through a wax-resist technique, creating a pleasing rhythm of colour across the vessel.

Though small enough to rest within the palm, the jar is executed with remarkable care, each detail thoughtfully considered. Its charming scale is balanced by a quiet sense of dignity, making it a refined example of Tang sancai.

The rounded base causes a slight instability, though the vessel remains self-standing. Aside from traces of soil adhering to the surface, there are no notable defects and the condition is good.
