Ming Dynasty Cizhou-type Ware White Slipped Incense Burner with Black Rim Design
A small incense burner of Cizhou-type ware, fired during the Ming dynasty. The vessel is markedly rounded in form, its surface entirely covered with white slip, while a single iron-painted line encircles the rim. This motif appears to echo the banded edging seen in painted wares of the Northern Song and Jin periods, and may also be understood in relation to the metal-bound rims of Jian ware tenmoku tea bowls, suggesting a continuity of decorative memory carried across time.
The creamy white glaze possesses a soft lustre, with faint stains radiating from pinholes, lending subtle variation to the surface. Although classed as an everyday ware, the clear contrast of white and black, together with the restrained and balanced form, imparts a quiet modernity that sits naturally within contemporary settings.
Signs of use are visible within the interior. Minor glaze losses and small frits can be observed, but the overall condition remains good.
