Fujina Ware Lipped Bowl with Bicolour Design

¥38,000 JPY

A katakuchi lipped bowl of Fujina ware, fired from the end of edo period to the early Meiji period. The form is composed with a low and stable centre of gravity, the surface divided between cobalt-blue (gosu) and amber glaze, applied across the body except for the footring. Three small spur marks remain in the well, while the boundary between the deep blue and dark brown glazes runs horizontally across the centre of the vessel.

The kakewake (bicolour-glaze) aesthetic of the San’in region is most commonly associated with the design produced by Yoshida Shōya from the Mingei movement, who drew inspiration from Meiji-period Inkyūzan ware and developed it further at Ushinoto in the early Shōwa period. This piece, however, predates that lineage, and may be regarded as a rare example from the Fujina kilns—first known for producing refined wares under official patronage, and later for everyday vessels. It embodies the sensibility of the San’in region, in which utility and aesthetic intention remain inseparably joined.

Two very small restorations are present at the spout, and a minor chip can be found at the footring. Apart from these, there are no notable defects, and the condition is good.
