Seto Ware Tea Bowl with Black Stripes and Blue Roundels Design

ARCHIVED

A tea bowl of Seto ware, fired in the late Edo period. The body is articulated by vertical iron-painted stripes, over which roundels are adorned. Within these circular motifs appear cross and lattice-like symbols, which may be understood as stylised variations of senmon (coin motifs) derived from square-holed coins—an ornamental lineage widely employed across Edo-period decorative arts.

While comparable examples of E-seto Type typically feature around five stripes, the present work counts nine, imparting a density and rhythmic vitality across the surface that recalls mugiwara-de (striped “barley-straw” patterns). The well is further enriched by a network of fine crackles, lending depth and quiet complexity to the glaze.

Several small chips are visible at the foot. Short hairlines may be present within the crackle, though these are not structurally significant. Overall, the condition is good.
