Karatsu Ware Chosen-Karatsu Style Small Bottle

ARCHIVED

A small bottle of Chōsen-Karatsu Style Kogaratsu, fired at the Fujinokawachi kiln during the Azuchi–Momoyama to early Edo period. The vessel has a compact form with a swelling lower body and a short upright neck, coated in overlapping layers of black glaze and straw-ash glaze. Where the two glazes merge, the surface settles into a deep bluish black, while the thickly descending glaze reveals dark brown exposed clay at its edges, lending the piece a distinct sense of age and gravity.

Chōsen-Karatsu style Karatsu ware is characterised by the superimposition of straw-ash glaze over an iron-rich black glaze, producing richly varied glaze effects. The Fujinokawachi kiln is recognised as one of the foremost sites associated with this technique. The present work has been adapted for use as a furidashi — a sugar candy bottle used in the tea ceremony. Though small enough to rest within the palm, it unfolds a glaze landscape of remarkable density and almost visionary depth.

A gold-repaired area (kintsugi) can be seen at the rim. Apart from kiln imperfections, there are no notable defects, and the condition is good. The piece is housed in an old wooden box inscribed “朝鮮唐津 振出し” (Chōsen-Karatsu Furidashi).
