Joseon Dynasty White Porcelain Stem Bowl
A stem bowl, fired in the late Joseon dynasty. A finely proportioned bowl rests upon a tall pedestal foot, covered overall in a softly flowing white glaze with a faint bluish tone. The elevated foot of such vessels derives from their ritual function, raising offerings above the ground for presentation to spirits and ancestors. Although formal ritual wares in early Joseon were principally made of bronze, ceramic ritual vessels came into widespread use among common households during the later period, reflecting both the broader dissemination of Neo-Confucian domestic rites and the increasing difficulty of obtaining bronze objects.
The present work is thought to be a product of a provincial kiln, yet the quality is notably high, combining the dignity of ritual form with practical functionality. The softly pooled glaze lends a quiet warmth to the otherwise restrained silhouette.
A small area resembling a chip can be seen on the footrim, though it appears to be a firing flaw. Apart from this, there are no notable defects, and the condition is excellent.
