Sukhothai Kingdom White Slipped Bowl
A Sukhothai ware bowl, fired during the Sukhothai Kingdom period. The vessel has a generously proportioned form with a gently everted rim, covered with a white slip beneath a transparent glaze. At the centre of the well, a pool of glassy, bead-like glaze descends softly across the surface, lending the piece a quiet, rustic character.
The Sukhothai kilns are best known for producing large quantities of bowls and dishes decorated with iron-painted fish and floral motifs, many of which were exported throughout Southeast Asia, particularly to the Philippines and Indonesia. Undecorated examples such as the present work are comparatively rare. Whether the absence of painted decoration was an intentional aesthetic choice or the result of an oversight during production remains uncertain. Unusual among the export wares of the Sukhothai kilns, the bowl possesses a simplicity and unassuming beauty of Mingei aesthetics.
Apart from kiln imperfections, there are no notable defects, and the condition is excellent.
