Goryeo Celadon Cup
A celadon cup, fired during the Goryeo dynasty. The vessel is formed as a lobed flower shape, with the sides gently fluted and the rim folded delicately outward. Covered entirely in celadon glaze, including the interior of the footring, it displays a clear and luminous green-blue tone characteristic of high-quality Goryeo celadon.
Cups of this type were inspired by Song dynasty tuō zhǎn (cup-and-stand sets), yet developed into a distinct Korean tradition. Paired with a matching stand, they were used in contexts of tea drinking and ritual observance. The present example dates to the twelfth century, when Goryeo celadon reached the height of its achievement. Its particularly clear, jade-like glaze exemplifies the celebrated bisaek (翡色) for which Goryeo ceramics are renowned. Rooted in the elegance of Song prototypes yet transformed through a uniquely Korean sensibility, the cup reflects the maturity of Goryeo celadon at its finest.
Three areas of damage around the rim, including small chips and losses, have been repaired with gold (kintsugi). Lines resembling hairlines do not extend through the body and appear superficial. Overall, the condition is good.
