Joseon Dynasty Gimhae Ware Katade-Type Cup

¥23,000 JPY

A large cup, fired in the vicinity of Gimhae during the early Joseon dynasty. Formed of a pottery body, it is entirely covered with a transparent glaze, retaining six small spur marks in the well and on the footring. The glaze carries a delicate bluish tint in places, its milky translucency lending the surface a quiet purity.

Soft and coarsely potted white wares of the Katade tradition produced around present-day Gimhae in South Gyeongsang Province are known in Japan as Gimhae-type. Their softly fired body and finely crackled glaze readily absorb the patina of tea or sake, allowing the surface to develop increasing depth and character through long use. The present example embodies this quiet beauty, inviting appreciation not only as an object but as a vessel that continues to mature in the hand.

Apart from kiln flaws and minor adhering kiln debris (furimono), there are no notable defects, and the condition is excellent.
